State Regulators Greenlight 41 Gas Turbines for xAI’s Mississippi Datacenter

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has officially permitted xAI to run 41 gas turbines at its Colossus 2 facility in Southaven. This decision allows the company to significantly increase its on-site power production to support its AI supercomputing efforts. These turbines are critical for running the advanced hardware necessary for xAI’s Grok artificial intelligence tool. The permit arrives at a time when the company is facing intense scrutiny over its environmental and community impact.

Since its launch, xAI has been aggressive in establishing a footprint in the Mid-South, beginning with its 13-football-field-sized Memphis facility. The Memphis site currently operates 15 gas generators, while a third facility called Macrohardrr is also being built in Southaven. Residents have described the sudden influx of industrial equipment as an “industrial surge” that was imposed on their residential neighborhoods. The speed of the expansion has left many locals feeling that their concerns were an afterthought to the state’s economic goals.

The NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have led the charge against the permit, citing a lack of transparency and community engagement. Abre’ Conner of the NAACP expressed outrage, stating that the MDEQ prioritizes corporate convenience over the health of local citizens. A public hearing held last month saw hundreds of people voice their opposition, with many reporting noise issues and concerns about air safety. Despite this, the state move forward with the permit on Tuesday.

The environmental risks associated with the 41 turbines are substantial, according to environmental scientists. The plant is expected to emit fine particulate matter, formaldehyde, and nitrogen oxide, all of which pose risks to human health. These pollutants are linked to higher rates of asthma, heart disease, and cancer in exposed populations. Given that DeSoto County already has poor air quality ratings, critics argue that adding such a large source of pollution is a dangerous move.

The approval of the xAI power plant highlights the massive energy consumption of the AI sector and its reliance on fossil fuels. As xAI scales its operations to compete with other tech giants, the environmental and social costs are becoming increasingly apparent. The ongoing litigation by the NAACP will likely be the next hurdle for Elon Musk’s AI venture. The future of the Southaven datacenter will depend on whether it can reconcile its massive power needs with the health of the local community.
