WhatsApp is strengthening its digital payment capabilities by launching a new feature that enables users to pay utility bills directly within the messaging app. This addition allows users to seamlessly manage their everyday expenses without leaving the platform.
Facilitated by the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), the service encompasses an impressive network of over 22,700 billers across 30 different categories. These categories cover essential services such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as payments for FASTag, insurance, credit cards, and loans.
To use the bill payment service, users simply navigate to the feature on their WhatsApp home screen, choose the relevant bill category and provider, input their account details, and then verify the bill amount before proceeding with the payment.
WhatsApp accommodates various payment methods, including UPI, debit, and credit cards. The platform also offers users the convenience of tracking past payments, monitoring upcoming bills, and managing multiple accounts linked to the same service provider.
This initiative underscores WhatsApp’s evolution into a comprehensive digital-services platform, enabling users to perform financial transactions and manage daily tasks without the need to toggle between different applications. It also reflects a broader trend where technology companies are increasingly integrating financial services into messaging platforms to enhance user convenience and accessibility.
