EU Mandates Google to Share Search and Android Features with AI Competitors

by admin477351

The European Union has mandated significant changes to Google’s operations, aiming to foster more competition within the digital market. Google is now required to enhance access to its Android platform and search services, adhering to new regulations designed to level the playing field for digital players.

Under these directives, Google must open up 11 key Android features to rival artificial intelligence developers. This move will allow competing AI assistants to utilize essential device functionalities and handle voice commands similarly to Google’s Gemini assistant. Users are expected to see these modifications in a forthcoming Android update slated for July 2027.

Moreover, Google will need to share specific anonymized search data with AI companies and competing search services. This provision aims to help these companies enhance their search-based products. Before sharing such data, Google is permitted to evaluate whether these entities meet requisite cybersecurity and data protection standards. This data-sharing initiative is set to commence in January of the coming year.

The European Commission has emphasized that these measures include safeguards to maintain user privacy and protect device security, all while promoting increased competition in AI and online search markets. Meanwhile, Google has raised concerns about the decision, suggesting that it might compromise user privacy and security protections, notwithstanding the company’s efforts to address the regulatory issues brought forth.

These directives are a component of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which targets the significant market power wielded by large technology companies and seeks to provide consumers with a broader range of digital service options.
