Amidst a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and fluctuating oil prices, South Korean stocks made notable strides on Monday, driven by robust performances in the semiconductor sector. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) advanced significantly, marking its third consecutive day of gains.
The KOSPI rose by 113.49 points, or 1.65%, closing at 7,007.72. This surge was largely fueled by investor optimism in artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks, which helped counterbalance concerns about the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Samsung Electronics, a heavyweight in the semiconductor industry, saw its shares jump by 4.98%, reaching 274,000 won. Similarly, SK hynix, another major player, experienced a modest rise of 0.59%, closing at 1.87 million won. SK Square, the parent company of SK hynix, also performed well, with its shares increasing by 4.45%.
Despite the positive trend in the semiconductor sector, the wider market presented a mixed picture. Hyundai Motor saw its shares dip by 1.64%, while LG Energy Solution faced a decline of 3.3%. These variances highlight the sector-specific dynamics influencing the broader market.
The South Korean currency also experienced a favorable shift, with the won strengthening against the US dollar. It closed at 1,381 won per dollar, improving by 4.5 won from the previous session. This currency movement provides an additional layer of context to the market’s performance, influenced by both local and international economic factors.
