Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest air travel hub, as it welcomed 8.15 million passengers in July, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. The shift in rankings comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers compared to July of the previous year, in contrast to a passenger increase of 2.3% at Istanbul. These figures have reignited discussions around the necessity for Heathrow to expand its capacity, with disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East partly blamed for the decline in passenger traffic.
The situation has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s proposed expansion, which includes a third runway. Currently operating at near full capacity with two runways, Heathrow’s £33 billion expansion plan aims to boost annual capacity to around 150 million passengers. Heathrow officials argue that additional capacity is crucial to bolstering the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism sectors.
In contrast, Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and 24/7 operations. The airport currently has three runways and plans to add a fourth by the end of 2026, further enhancing its capacity to handle more passengers and solidifying its position as a major international hub.
While Heathrow’s numbers have slipped, other UK airports have seen record-breaking figures. London Stansted and Manchester airports both recorded their highest-ever passenger numbers for July, with 3.1 million and 3.4 million travelers, respectively. These figures highlight the growing demand for air travel within the UK despite the challenges faced by Heathrow.
